CONFLICT AREA / COUNTRY OF REFERENCE: EUROPEAN UNION

Unlike other seed banks my archive is collection of seeds that are “informally” moving around the globe within the networks of migrations. The starting point of my research is my neighborhood in Tuscany, where Chinese migrants grow gardens of chinese crops. By planting their seeds in a “stranger” soil they make this place familiar and inhabitable. On the other side the presence of allochthonous seeds is perceived by the locals as a threaten to their identity. A paradoxical war was declared by the Institutions against these peaceful farmers, often resulting in the confiscation of their lands. Later I realized that many other migrant groups are growing their own crops in Italy. since several years

 

I started collecting these migrant seeds, dealing with various communities: Sri Lankans and Bengali in Rome, Pakistani asylum seekers in Piedmont, Senegali people in Veneto. This is just a little fragment of a huge urban-rural landscape of variety.
